Requires Prescription (YES/NO): Yes
Generics: Sitagliptin + Metformin Hydrochloride
Used For: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (blood sugar control)
Class: DPP-4 Inhibitor + Biguanide (Antidiabetic Combination)
Sitagliptin: A DPP-4 inhibitor that increases levels of incretin hormones. These hormones stimulate insulin release and reduce glucagon levels in response to meals, thereby lowering blood sugar.
Metformin: A biguanide that decreases glucose production in the liver, increases insulin sensitivity, and improves glucose uptake by muscles.
Together, they help achieve better blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially when diet, exercise, or single therapy is insufficient.
Dosage (general guidance – doctor decides exact dose):
Typical starting dose: 1 tablet (50mg Sitagliptin / 500mg Metformin) twice daily with meals.
Dose may be adjusted based on blood sugar levels and tolerance.
Always follow your doctor’s prescription.
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, headache, upper respiratory infections.
Serious (seek medical help):
Lactic acidosis (rare but serious with Metformin)
Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
Pancreatitis (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting)
Drug Interactions:
Alcohol → ↑ risk of lactic acidosis.
Strong diuretics or ACE inhibitors → ↑ kidney problems.
Other diabetes medicines (insulin, sulfonylureas) → ↑ risk of low blood sugar.
Corticosteroids, thyroid hormones → may increase blood sugar.
Sita-Met is prescribed for:
Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Patients uncontrolled on metformin or sitagliptin alone
Patients requiring dual therapy to improve glycemic control
Do not use Sita-Met if you have:
Allergy to sitagliptin, metformin, or any component.
Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
Severe kidney impairment (eGFR < 30 ml/min/1.73m²).
Metabolic acidosis, including lactic acidosis.
Severe liver disease, alcohol abuse, or heart failure (risk of lactic acidosis).
Monitor kidney function regularly (before starting and during treatment).
Take with meals to reduce stomach upset.
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
Inform your doctor before surgery or X-ray with contrast dye (metformin should be stopped temporarily).
Not a substitute for diet and exercise.
Warning 1: Risk of lactic acidosis with metformin (rare but serious).
Warning 2: May cause acute pancreatitis – stop and seek medical help if severe abdominal pain occurs.
Warning 3: Use with caution in elderly patients and those with kidney, liver, or heart disease.
Category B: Limited data, use only if clearly needed.
Insulin is usually preferred for diabetes management in pregnancy.
Not recommended during breastfeeding without doctor’s advice.
Store at room temperature (below 25°C).
