Cozaar contains Losartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB).
It works by:
Blocking angiotensin II from binding to its receptors
Relaxing blood vessels
Lowering blood pressure
Reducing strain on the heart
Slowing progression of kidney disease in diabetics
Active Ingredient: Losartan Potassium 50mg
Usual Adult Dose: Once daily or as prescribed by your physician
May be adjusted based on individual response and medical condition
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Fatigue
Upper respiratory infections
Back pain
Diarrhea
Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels)
Rare: Kidney dysfunction, allergic reactions, angioedema
Potassium supplements / Potassium-sparing diuretics: May raise potassium dangerously
NSAIDs: May reduce blood pressure-lowering effect and harm kidneys
Lithium: Risk of lithium toxicity
Diuretics / Antihypertensives: May enhance blood pressure lowering
Alcohol: May increase side effects like dizziness
Used for:
High blood pressure (Hypertension)
Reducing risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy
Protecting kidneys in type 2 diabetes with proteinuria
Hypersensitivity to Losartan or any of its components
During pregnancy (especially second and third trimesters)
Patients with severe liver impairment
Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes
Monitor blood pressure, kidney function, and potassium levels regularly
Avoid salt substitutes containing potassium
Inform doctor if you have heart failure, liver or kidney issues
Do not use during pregnancy. May cause fetal harm. Stop immediately if pregnancy is detected.
Use cautiously in patients with renal artery stenosis—may worsen kidney function.
May cause hypotension, especially in patients who are volume-depleted (e.g., on diuretics).
Pregnancy Category: D (Not recommended)
