Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair — ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
⚠️ Important Note: Avoid taking ciprofloxacin with milk, dairy products, or calcium-fortified juices, as they can interfere with drug absorption and reduce effectiveness.
Adults: Typically 250 mg to 750 mg twice daily, depending on the infection
Duration: Usually 5 to 14 days as prescribed
Take with a full glass of water; can be taken with or without food
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Dizziness, headache
Rash or itching
Tendon inflammation or rupture (rare but serious)
Photosensitivity (avoid excessive sun exposure)
Risk of QT prolongation in heart patients
Antacids, dairy, or supplements with calcium, magnesium, zinc, or iron may reduce absorption
Blood thinners (warfarin): may increase bleeding risk
NSAIDs: risk of seizures
Theophylline: risk of toxicity when taken with ciprofloxacin
Ciproxin 250 is used for treating various bacterial infections, including:
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Respiratory Tract Infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
Sinusitis
Gastrointestinal infections
Prostatitis
Typhoid fever
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Children or adolescents (except for specific conditions under supervision)
Pregnancy and lactation unless clearly needed
Tendon disorders related to quinolone use
Use caution in patients with CNS disorders (seizure risk)
Avoid excessive sunlight due to photosensitivity risk
Do not use with alcohol or caffeine – may increase nervous system side effects
Hydrate well to prevent crystal formation in urine
Do not take ciprofloxacin with milk, yogurt, or calcium-rich beverages, including citrus juices like orange juice or grapefruit juice, as these can hinder the absorption of the medication.
Maintain adequate hydration throughout the course to prevent side effects related to the kidneys.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol while taking this medicine due to nervous system sensitivity.
May cause serious tendon inflammation or rupture, especially in elderly or those on corticosteroids.
Prolonged QT interval: Avoid in patients with heart rhythm problems or on QT-prolonging drugs.
May trigger central nervous system effects like agitation, tremors, or confusion—particularly in elderly patients.
Pregnancy Category: C – Use with caution
Storage: Store at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture.
Take Ciproxin with a full glass of water at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after consuming dairy or citrus products to ensure proper absorption.
