Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID)
Brufen (Ibuprofen) works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which are involved in the production of prostaglandins—chemicals responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. By reducing these prostaglandins, Brufen effectively relieves pain and reduces fever and inflammation.
Adults: 200 mg to 400 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed (max 2400 mg/day)
Dosage may vary depending on the condition and patient’s age. Always follow physician’s advice.
Common: Nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain, dizziness, and rash
Serious: Gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and allergic reactions
Long-term use may increase the risk of cardiovascular events and GI complications
Aspirin and other NSAIDs: May increase risk of GI bleeding
Antihypertensives (ACE inhibitors, diuretics): Reduced effectiveness
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin): Enhanced risk of bleeding
Methotrexate & Lithium: May increase toxicity
Brufen is commonly used to manage:
Headaches & Migraines
Menstrual cramps
Dental pain
Muscle aches & joint pain
Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis
Fever in both adults and children
Avoid using Brufen if:
You have a history of allergy to NSAIDs
You have peptic ulcer disease, GI bleeding, or severe hepatic/renal impairment
You are in the last trimester of pregnancy
You have severe heart failure
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration
Patients with asthma, hypertension, kidney or liver issues, or bleeding disorders must consult a doctor
Should not be taken with alcohol, as it increases the risk of GI side effects
Prolonged use may lead to GI ulcers and bleeding, particularly in the elderly or those on corticosteroids or anticoagulants.
May increase risk of heart attack or stroke, especially with long-term use or in patients with cardiovascular conditions.
Not recommended during pregnancy (3rd trimester) or breastfeeding unless prescribed.
C (First two trimesters) — Risk cannot be ruled out
D (Third trimester) — Contraindicated
